If the Red Sox do not make a trade this offseason they will start the season with 6 quality starters. If you are making up the rotation would you go with 6 or move one of them to the pen. Wakefield looks to be the odd man out which is too bad since he started last season so well before the injury.

Theo and Tito should at least entertain the notion of a 6 man rotation. If all 6 are healthy and performing well in spring training, it would be very difficult to send one to the bullpen, presumably Wakefield. But, as the saying goes, and we were harshly reminded of that last year, you can never have too much good pitching.

Once again, the Red Sox are trying to test out the age old saying...you can never have too much pitching.
a 6 man rotation...or one to the bullpen? I think they are going to do a mix of the two. The top 3 in the rotation are going to go on regular 5 days rest. The Sox are going to want more, not less starts from Beckett, Lester and Lackey. Also, in particular with Beckett, he does MUCH better when he is kept on regular rest, so an extra day is not something that unless he isn't healthy...they are going to look to give him.
I think the bottom of the order is going to be much more fluid, I think they are going to be moving them in and out of the rotation. I think they'll place Wake in the rotation every 10 days or so...and have him replace either Buch or Dice-K, depending on who it would benefit it more. Whoever is the odd man out at the time, will be available out of the bullpen for a long relief man...if needed.
I also think they aren't going to consider sending Buch to the pen on a consistent basis because they want him out there pitching...to either benefit the ball club and also...to show other teams our shiny new toy when it comes to mid-season trade time. So, I imagine he will be placed in the rotation over Wake...if it comes down to one of them consistently needing to come out of the BP.
I am sure glad this is Tito and John Farrell's decision to make and not mine.
