The Red Sox hoped to take advantage of playing the Indians and make their way back to 500, however instead it looked like it was the Indians who took advantage of playing the Red Sox. Felix Doubront struggled on the mound and didn't make it out of the 5th inning in the loss.
Doubront has looked shaky in his last few times on the mound which is a sharp difference from how great he looked in the beginning of the season. I have to wonder if he is hitting a workload wall at this time of the season. Doubront did show some flash of brilliance in the middle innings, however he lost it in the 5th inning and gave the lead back to the Tribe. Doubront gave up a single run in the 1st inning when he gave up a leadoff home run to Jason Donald. Doubront also gave up a single and a double, however he got the last out of the inning and didn't allow either of them to come home. Doubront settled down and actually retired 9 batters in a row. However the 5th inning would spell trouble for Dubi. With one out, Doubront gave up a single, a walk and then an RBI double to bring the Indians within a run. Doubront then issued another walk and an RBI single to tie the game 3-3. Bobby V came out to get Doubront and Andrew Miller was in the game. Miller gave up a sac fly to Brantley to give the Indians the lead. Sox 3-4. Miller got the final out of the inning, but the damage was done. Miller also pitched a scoreless 6th inning and then Tazawa took the mound for a scoreless 7th as well. Tazawa gave up 2 singles to start the 8th and he was replaced with Craig Breslow. Breslow gave up a sac bunt to move the runners over and then a walk to Marson. Breslow gave up an RBI groundout to Donald and the Indians had a 5-3 lead.
As for the offense, they got to Jimenez just a little bit early in the game, however they were unable to make a late inning rally once the Indians took the lead. Adrian Gonzalez hit his 12th HR of the season in the 4th inning to give the Sox a 2-1 lead. The Sox added another run in the 5th with an RBI single from Dustin Pedroia. Sox 3-1. Unfortunately that would be the last time the Sox bats were able to crack the scoreboard. Jimenez seemed to get his legs under him and became a strikeout machine. The Sox got some hits later on in the game, but were never able to get that clutch hit to bring them home.
The Sox are now 3 games under 500 and it is getting late into the season.
