Oki, Lowell, Lackey, Defense, and More

The Red Sox have avoided arbitration with Hideki Okajima and signed him to a one year deal worth $2.75 million.

Tito says the Red Sox will treat Mike Lowell well:

We’ll take good care of him. He’s a guy that deserves respect. It’s easy to give him respect, he’s earned it. We love him.”

John Lackey wants to prove he is the ace of the staff, he doesn't need to start opening day:

Honestly, at the beginning of the season I don’t really care. I’ve talked to Tito a little about this already and I told him you can throw me out there my 30 times and you can make a decision once we get to the playoffs.

Bill James explained the Red Sox approach this offseason:

Last year's team needed some defense, we had to invest in some defense, and the market seemed pretty good for it. But to say that's the new thing and it will be that way from now on, I wouldn't do that.''

Jeremy Hermida is ready to play for a real baseball team:

To be able to come up here and join a team like this is something I’ve been waiting for for a long time, to get in a market like this. I’m thrilled to be a part of this. The team that they’re putting together up here, it looks great on paper. We’ve got to prove it on paper.

...and  Sonoma Dave has some words for those Yankee fans lurking around her.
