Baseball Finds its Way Into Senate Race

Baseball, particularly Red Sox baseball, has become more and more of a campaign issue in Massachusetts in recent years.  Curt Schilling joined John McCain throughout New England in the 2008 election and Rudy Gulliani caught flack for saying he was rooting for the Red Sox in the 2007 World Series when he was a lifelong Yankee fan.

The Massachusetts special election for the Senate seat once held by Ted Kennedy, has seen even more Red Sox related campaigning. The #redsox hashtag on twitter has been hijack by spammers trying to influence voters with political tweets that have nothing to do with baseball.  This strategy may backfire as it has been angering Red Sox fans.

Yesterday the issue became even bigger when Coakley made a monumental gaffe by saying Curt Schilling was a Yankee fan, the story is now making national news.  Curt Schilling didn't take long to respond:

But never, and I mean never, could anyone ever make the mistake of calling me a Yankee fan. Well, check that, if you didn’t know what the hell is going on in your own state maybe you could….

It is doubtful that many will make up their mind on who to vote for based on one baseball comment but it does show how important baseball is in New England.  I don't think anyone in California would notice if Barbara Boxer made a wrong comment about the A's.

They SHOULD make up their mind based on this
The Attorney General makes a wild accusation on something she knows nothing about. Then when she's told that she's wrong, says essentially, "What has he done for us LATELY?"

She demonstrated that...
1) She is completely out of touch with Mass voters (espec if you include the other gaffes about Catholics, shaking voters' hands in the cold, etc. etc.)
2) She's not trustworthy.
3) She's inept as a politician.
4) She has a terrible sense of judgement.

I am a lifelong Democrat...and if I lived in MA, I'd probably vote for Coakley.

I've heard a lot of people say her knowledge of sports should have nothing to do with her ability to be a good politician.

While I don't think she has to know who the current 3rd baseman is...I do think it speaks to a problem with her campaign. You have to know your area and what is important to voters. And if loudmouth Curt Schilling is campaigning for Scott Brown...you had better know enough to not sound like an idiot calling him a Yanks fan. Curt Mother Trucking Schilling.

It's like when I laughed at the idiocy of Sarah Palin being in Philly...and saying Go Steelers because it was a team from PA. You have to know your area...or no matter how smart you actually are, you end up looking like an idiot.
