Don't Count Wagner Out
Written by Matt O'Donnell

There is a lot of chatter this morning that Billy Wagner is going to retire based on an article in the N.Y. Post.  His answers were not an all-out commitment to retirement so there is a chance he will be playing baseball next year.  His agent thinks he will be back:

“That’s not what Billy has told me or indicated to me about next year. That’s not to say that he couldn’t, but he’s given me no indication that he will retire. Certainly I am moving towards him playing next year.”

The Red Sox hope he will be back so they can offer him arbitration and if he goes elsewhere they will get some draft picks.  If he retires they get nothing.  Last month he said he had not made up his mind and he was going to talk to his wife about 2010.

No way
I don't believe that he is even contemplating retirement for a second. The only reason he busted his ass to come back from Tommy John was so he could hit his milestones.

I even introduced the option of trading off Pap and resigning Wagner for a year to close while Bard gets better situated... the readers didn't like it! (Apparently Pap support runs deep...)

I am not sold on Wags retiring. I think he's the kind of fella who says things based on the emotion he's feeling at the time...so give him a month or so to think about it and another team offering him the chance to be their closer...and I think he'll be interested.

And yes, Pap support does run deep...at least from this member of Red Sox Nation. I like Wags, but at this stage of his career, I don't think he's even remotely in Paps category.
