Who's Gonna Play Short?

Left field is the biggest hole that the Red Sox need to fill this offseason, but there is still the issue at short.  Here are the free agent shortstops from MLB Trade Rumors:

Orlando Cabrera (35) - Type A, can't be offered arbitration
Juan Castro (38)
Alex Cora (34)
Craig Counsell (39)
Bobby Crosby (30)
Adam Everett (33)
Chris Gomez (39)
Alex Gonzalez (32) - $6MM mutual option with a $500K buyout
Khalil Greene (30)
Jerry Hairston Jr. (34) - Type B
John McDonald (35)
Luis Rodriguez (30)
Marco Scutaro (34) - Type A
Miguel Tejada (36) - Type A
Omar Vizquel (43)
Jack Wilson (32) - $8.4MM club option with a $600K buyout

Quite a few familiar names on the list.  The easy choice is to just pick up the option on Alex Gonzalez.  He has a good glove and showed some improvement at the plate once he re-joined the Sox but I wouldn't do it.  The name that jumps out at me is Bobby Crosby.  Being out here in the Bay Area I have been able to watch him play many games with the A's.  Crosby has struggled the last few seasons but has a ton of upside; he can be signed on the cheap and can play other positions in the infield.  Signing Crosby would allow Lowrie to start at short with Crosby there as a utility infielder.  Letting Gonzalez walk will not be popular with the fans but it could free up some more money to sign Bay or Holliday.

Oohh
Alex Gonzalez! He will be back for 1 year.

Jed lowrie, traded, multie player "big name" deal, maybe for some kind of pitching.

Jose Iglesias, will be flirted in the 2010 season to see his potential.

Jose Iglesias, 2011 full time SS.

and 1 more thing.
The 2011 Red Sox will have a lot of NEW faces, rookies and old ones gone.

Converted full time Red Sox 2011:
Josh Reddick, OF
Daniel Bard, Closer
Michael Bowden, R (2010)
Junichi Tazawa, R
Jose Iglesias, SS
Casey Kelly, SP
Dustin Richardson , R (maybe)

Who will be gone:
Jonathan Papelbon
Manny Delcarmen
Ramon Ramirez
Mike Lowell
Jed Lowrie
David Ortiz
Tim Wakefield (retire?)
Jason Varitek (?, I hope a coach and not another team)

Ya ya im not a GM or a member of the red sox staff and this is soley my opinion. So have at it!

I say...pick up Gonzo's option. I think he has shown that when he is in a lineup with hitters around him, he can show promise. And secondly, his defense...is top notch. So, I think they should sign him and then see what they get from Lowrie. Lowrie has WAY too many question marks. He hasn't been healthy and even when he was...have we seen enough to even know what kind of player he truly will be??

As for SoxMeRed's predictions...I agree with some, but not others. I think Bowden will get traded before the end of 2010. I also think that Casey Kelly will be gone if Theo can make the trade that we all seem to think he needs to make. And...Bard may be the closer, but he needs to show that he can handle the role and as of today, he hasn't been given that opportunity yet. Tim Wakefield will be pitching with the Sox as long as his body allows him to..so, I can't imagine he'll be gone by 2011.

We'll see. I much more concerned about 2010 these days than 2011. And my only constant thought about 2011...involves one Mr. Joe Mauer. That is all.

Nice
I like the Joe Mauer comment. When was the last time the red sox picked up a superstar? Manny? They would have to complete a deal for him while in contract and before the july deadline. Or the yankees will swoop-in and over pay another player.

The Yankees are where legends go to get over paid and then die off to become a washed out bag of rice.

Rice just sounded good, lol.

Wake wants to reach 200 wins in a Sox uni and go past Clemens and Young for most wins in a Sox uni, and it may take him through 2011 to get it. He showed he still has what it takes. Bowden is primarily a starting pitcher.
