This Passes for Journalism? Part II

For the second time this offseason Bill Madden of the NY Daily News has put a Red Sox related item in his column that is completely untrue.  Last month he wrongly speculated that the Red Sox were not going to try to re-sign Jason Bay because of his agent Scott Boras.  Madden is back at it by claiming the Red Sox are reportedly trying to get Hanley Ramirez.

Now it also looks as if Hanley Ramirez won't ever see that new stadium in a Marlins uniform as the Red Sox, who let incumbent Alex Gonzalez go, are reportedly engaged in talks with Florida about reacquiring the All-Star shortstop

Marlins beat writer Clark Spencer said the rumor was completely false.

There is no truth to the rumor that the Marlins are in trade talks with the Red Sox -- or anyone else -- for shortstop Hanley Ramirez.

He sure got it wrong on J.Bay/Boras, and he probably got it wrong on Hanley, but it would be just like Theo to make such a blockbuster deal.

What do beat writers ever really know, there only club house reporters.

Rumors are simply that, things that happen you Never hear about until its done. Rumors are Fun to follow and think about, thats it.

Reporters should at least cite a source like "a team executive" or somebody, Madden just skips that part and makes stuff up on his own.
