Theo May Get Burned on Saito Too
Written by Matt O'Donnell

The Red Sox missed out on bringing Alex Gonzalez back on the cheap by waiting to see if there were other options and the same thing may happen with Takashi Saito.  The Red Sox did not pick up his option with the hope that they could bring him back for less money if Billy Wagner goes elsewhere.  There are now eight teams interested in Saito so there is a chance that Boston could be without either Wagner or Saito next season.  We'll find out soon if Wagner accepts arbitration, if he doesn't Theo needs to get busy bringing back Saito if he is still available.

Lol @ saito and Gonzalez. Theo's not really missing out on much. Unless you consider replacent level performance for 10$million something that a team shouldn't miss out on.

Losing Saito could hurt when you consider that MDC struggled for the 2nd half, RR also had problems and Wagner might be gone. Right now the Sox have Paps, Bard, and Oki that they can count on in the pen, not much else.

Strange offseason. There are reasonable arguments both for keeping Saito, Bay, Gonzo, Wagner, Rocco and for letting them go. Unfortunately, for Theo these signings all seem to revolve around the lowest price. By dithering, Gonzo took a deal for less than Theo was going to offer, and now it'll cost more. Bay rejected pre and mid-season offers (could he hit 40HR next year? I think so, if he's at Fenway), and now he will cost more. That Saito did a very good job last year is attested by 8 teams lining up with offers, probably more than he was willing to accept from the Sox. Rocco also did well last year, better than expected. He is a good platoon with J.D., and would fit well with lefty Hermida, but not even a trade rumor? I understand going to arb with "A" type Wagner, but if Theo isn't going to sign him, he'd better get Soriano or Mike Gonzalez signed up now. And I wonder what's going on with Harden, Bedard, Sheets, Duchscherer? Duke would be a great swing man for long relief and spot starts. This team just needs health and some tweaks to win 95 again, but where are the tweaks?

very slow moving offseason indeed. Kind of like last season when the Yanks signed Tex and the Sox responded by signing Nick Green.
