Should the Sox pick up 'Tek's option?

I read that the Sox will not pick it up for 2010. I say they should pick it up. 'Tek has been with the Sox for his entire career, since '97, and has been the Captain since 2004. If 'Tek is not ready for retirement, then the Sox should do the right thing and keep him for one more year. The $2 million difference between the Sox option and 'Tek's option is pocket change. In 'Dirty Water', 'Tek had a prominent role in the opening chapters, while the book mentioned 'honoring the brand.' Having 'Tek finish his career in a Sox uni is the right thing to do, if 'Tek is still wanting to play. (Remember when 'Tek blew out his knee the day after the trading deadline? The team fell apart starting that day.) Not picking it is kin to the low-ball offer that the Steinbrenner's offered Torre. 'Tek's value to this team over the years is most definitely worth the $2m, whether he is the starter or the back-up. Martinez has proven that he can handle Wake's knuckleball.

Theo- do the right thing, honor the brand.

Make Tek the backup catcher and the bench coach. I think they will decline the option and see if Tek gets any offers from other teams before they up their offer. Bottom line is Tek will be on the team next year unless Boras screws things up.

I don't think they should wait to see what other offers come in, so they could offer him $4m instead of the $5m option? That's not right. They should just do it. He's been such a cornerstone for all these years. He's earned it, absolutely no doubt about that, it would be an insult to him and I wouldn't be surprised if he walked if they do decline to pick up the option.

As for the bench coach suggestion, I like it, but I am under the impression that players make better coaches if they've had a break of a season or two before returning as a coach.

I totally agree with Tek becoming bench coach and have been saying it for months. With Millsie out of the picture, this team couldn't find a better coach to lead them in that capacity. He is a players player (coach) and everyone always talks about what leadership he brings. Leaders who can't play coach, I'd take the option and pay him what he is listed for jst to coach.

Will the Sox take their $5M option on Tek? Absolutely not. They will see how much he wants to play with them...and if he does, he can take his player option for 3M. Tek had this year to show the Red Sox that he can stay competitive...and he just didn't get it done. So, what else do you expect the Sox to do? Tek is the heart of this team, but it's also a business...so the heart of the team can stay, if he wants to, as the backup catcher...but he can do it for 2 mil less.

Can you picture Derek Jeter in any other uni besides a yankees? Even when he get older and no longer has the glove or bat he has now, he will never be anything but a yankee. Just as Jeter will always be a yankee and nothing but a yankee (I'm so sorry for you, Mr. Jeter), 'Tek should never be low-balled (as the yanks did to Torre.)

I dunno - seems like the Yankees managed to dust themselves off rather nicely after losing Torre. Do I think they would have won this ring with him instead of Girardi? No way. Look at how Charlie Manuel outsmarted Torre, but Girardi outsmarted Manuel.

This Yankee fan hopes you guys keep Varitek another year, preferably starting at catcher against the Yanks. Will pad our team's stolen base totals! smilies/wink.gif

If they bring Tek back he will see far less time behind the dish but as we found out last season, V-Mart does not throw out many runners either, so Lisa may get her wish either way.
