Omar Vizquel at Short?
Written by Matt O'Donnell

The Red Sox have plenty of talent on the horizon at shortstop so they only need a placeholder for the short term.  Peter Gammons speculated on some of the options in his latest post:

There seem to be several ways the Sox could go at shortstop, although it is clear they want Jed Lowrie to play at Pawtucket, make up for what amounts to a lost season and prove that his wrist will hold up. In the meantime, they could sign Alex Gonzalez at a discount, perhaps add Omar Vizquel as depth, or look at some of the other alternatives.

Vizquel is looking to sign with a new team according to Fox Sports:

Free-agent shortstop Omar Vizquel will not be back with the Rangers, major-league sources say. Vizquel, 42, had 195 plate appearances last season, and is looking for the same type of utility role. He would prefer a higher-profile team, one source says.

Signing Vizquel would give the Red Sox a solid glove at short and allow them to slowly bring back Lowrie or bring up Jose Iglesias who has been very impressive in the Arizona Fall League.

Cant argue with that. If he wants a 1 or 2 year contract under 5mil, why not. But wtf was wrong with agon?

The piggies on the bus go round and round.

Although Iglesias is raking in the AFL (.295/.348/.443) it seems like his ETA is no better than early 2011. If he is up before September, then something has either gone wrong or he blew up beyond any and all projection.

I hadn't thought they may recycle Jed Lowrie back through Pawtucket, especially as the docs have given him a clean bill of health and good prognosis. That's not a bad idea, but if he is fully recovered he will rake in AAA and be ready for Fenway by June-July. If we have Gonzo (yes!) and Omar (yes!), what happens to Jed? Most everyone who has followed his career and watched him play are convinced will be well above average. I imagine if Nick Green is recovered from back surgery, the season will start with either Omar/Nick or Gonzo/Nick.
