Jonathon Papelbon makes $6.3MM, less than half that of Mariano, who set the bar which Pap wants to re-set. Over the next two years of Jon's contract, he will probably refuse an extension, because Theo will probably want to tie him up short term for less than $10MM per. Why would he accept that? Unfortunately, ONLY the NYY would offer Jonathon, assuming he is still among the best and Joba's not closing, a contract worth 4/$65. With the fickle Boston fans and media getting on his case lately (shame on him for just 38SV), what would be his motivation to take a home town discount?? I wish the fans would get off his case and start realizing what contributions our wild and whacky Pap brings to a team that is considered staid. |
