Baldelli, Tek, and Bard

Rocco Baldelli wants to return to Boston but has not heard from them yet.

The Red Sox might choose to go younger and bring up Luis Exposito as the backup catcher.  Exposito has a .753 OPS in the Arizona Fall League.  Varitek offers leadership value but the Red Sox have other choices if they let him walk including Gregg Zaun.

Fire Brand of the AL has a great post on Bards breaking ball.

yep
Rocco Baldelli turned out to be the low man on the totem pole.

Doesn't Varitek have a player option for 2010? 3 million I think? He may be back whether the front office wants him or not. If they decide not to pick up his club option I hope they do the classy thing and at least offer him a coaching position somewhere within the organization.

That was stupid of some Yankees fans. I guess the excitement got in the way of common sense.

He does have a player option of $3 million but they may want to limit his playing time or they will have to pay him more.

"There also is $2 million in potential incentives in the player option in 2010, which would be triggered if Varitek plays 80 to 120 games."

I don't see Rocco coming back...which is a shame since I am a fan of Rico and all he does (expect for being what we would call fragile!)

If Tek uses his player option (which let's be clear...is his only option these days), his playing time will be limited anyways. VMART will be the everyday catcher...and Tek will be used to spell VMART and give his legs a breather over at 1st base. Everyone, even Beckett, is going to have to get used to being caught by VMART. And as much as I love the Captain...that is a very good thing. We can't have another year of watching Tek at the plate...and then not being able to throw out the runner behind it.

As for the article about Bard. I don't think he's read to be the closer as of yet..but he's learning. And for right now, he has time..since we still have Pap hanging around in the bullpen. Bard's slider though...when it is working, that pitch is SICK.
