All Marco-All the Time

Is it just me or is Marco Scutaro the only player anybody is talking about?  Once Gonzo signed with the Jays all eyes turned to Scutaro and they have not looked away. The hole at short has overtaken the hole in left in the media this week.

Bob Ryan thinks Theo made a huge mistake by not signing Gonzalez and now the Red Sox have to get creative.  Scutaro seems like the answer at first glance but there are some problems when you did deeper.  He is a Type A free agent so the Sox would have to give up draft picks for him.  If Bay or Wagner sign elsewhere the picks don't matter but they do again if the Sox sign Holliday and keep Wanger.  Scutaro is also coming off of a career year so his perceived value may be inflated.  He will also want to sign a 3-year deal which is 1 year too long for the Sox who have Iglesias waiting in the wings.  Theo may wait until he knows what is happening with Wagner before he risks 2 picks on Scuatro so once again we are in a holding pattern.  Theo's patience allowed Gonzo to move on, could the same thing happen with Scutaro?

Here's the latest buz:

Scutaro wants to sign at least a 2-year deal, preferably with the Red Sox or Dodgers.

The Mariners are interested in him, the Ranger are not.

Are you sure they have to give up draft picks? I didn't think the Jays had offered him arbitration...

they do have to offer him arbitration first but I can't see how they won't

I read somewhere that he might accept the arbitration offer. This was before they signed AGon so that probably changed now though.

The Jays threatened to keep him and play him in LF if he accepted arbitration. He made only $1.1M in 2009, and has played well at 3b, SS, 2b, 1b & OF, so they would have a talented, athletic left fielder with good range, glove and arm, but little pop, for peanuts. And, if Gonzos knees gave out, they would still have Marco for SS. I suspect A.A. has already thought of that.
