Gonzo's heart breaking family tragedy...

So, since today is a day without Red Sox baseball...I was looking for something baseball related to read.  I found it and it broke my heart.  I saw a link about Alex Gonzalez on twitter and clicked away. The article I found...was a devastating tale of Alex's 3 year old son, Johan, who has been in a coma since sometime in 2007.  Johan was born premature and struggled since his first breath.  On an away trip, Johan took a turn for the worse and has been in a coma ever since.

“The baby was moving, recognizing, eating normal,” he recalled. “We took him to Cincinnati where I was playing, and one day I had to leave for a road trip. I got to New York, I played that night, and the next day the baby stopped breathing. We got back and the doctors from Cincinnati Children's Hospital talked to us about it — there's no chance the baby's going to have a normal life.”

There was no way for Gonzalez to know just how different Johan's life would be. He had a somber tone as he explained the severity of his son's condition."

I already knew I liked Alex Gonzalez.  I liked his spirit and attitude...and the fact that he seemed to come to Boston at the perfect moment.  Now, I adore him even more...my heart breaks for him and his family and my thoughts and prayers are with them all.  The article mentions that Johan is currently fighting an infection and they are not sure his body can handle another surgery.  If you are the praying type...say a few for Johan and his family.

I heart you Gonzo....for the man that you are, off the field...way more than on.  I'm sending all the good thoughts I have.

i remember that day because i used to watch the reds once in a while on mlb.com just to see alex play ...i was real sad when the sox traded him but i had heard here and there that his son was sick but didn't know the circumstances...one thing i will say alex gonzales loves playing in boston when he was still on the reds it seemed like he just didn't look like what i remembered in boston. and seeing him these last few months he's glad to be there...one more reason it would be great to go as far as we can in the 09 postseason
