Placido Polanco Suddenly Becomes a Good Option

If the Red Sox are serious about having Pedroia play short then signing Placido Polanco becomes a good option for Theo, especially since the Tigers are not going to offer him arbitration.  Polanco hit .285 with an OPS of .727 last season.  Compare that to Nick Green's .236 average and .669 OPS last season.  Signing Polanco would give the offense a boost without having to sacrifice draft picks.  Theo could easily sign Polanco to a 2-year deal vs. the 3-year deal Scutaro is seeking.  Palanco is a good defensive player who made only 2 errors this season and earned his second gold glove in three years.

It is true that Polanco represents a viable replacement for Pedey at second should the rumors be true, but I hardly believe he is the best option available. Frankly, if Theo's trying to better this team enough to compete with the Yankees, a Polanco signing doesn't cut it. I think this could be a precursor to a Brandon Phillips trade. It's no secret that the Reds are looking to offload salary and Phillips is owed something like $17mm over the next two years. He'd be an excellent offensive upgrade, and he has typically played stellar defense at 2B through his career, esp. the last three years. He is a consistent 20/20 producer and could very well be a 30/30 guy, as he was in 2007, in the right situation. His walks are abysmal but he doesn't strike out much either. Basically I think Phillips is a better fit because the two things the Red Sox are beginning to lack in their lineup is power and youth. Phillips is not "young" by any means, but he is 5 or 6 years younger than a declining Polanco (posted his lowest BA since his second season in the majors in 2009), provides about twice as much power in the lineup as Polanco, and just may be the needed spark all-around to propel the Sox to a championship. Worth the extra cost of a salary-dump type trade? Absolutely.

don't forget you have Iglesias coming up in a couple of years so you only need a guy to hold down the fort until then.

I am, as all of Red Sox Nation should be, extremely excited about the prospects with Jose Iglesias, but I'm also concerned that too much faith in his abilities could lead to squandered chances at better teams. If we got Phillips, sure it would be a large salary figure to take on, but he only has 2 years left. We can also consider that, given Iglesias' defensive prowess, it may very well related to third base, where we all agree there will eventually be an opening barring a trade for a first baseman this year.

Who would you give up for Phillips? or what do you think the asking price will be?

This is quite a pickle we're in...
First let me say that the Sox really dropped the ball on Gonzo. They didn't want to pay him $6M and now look how desperate we are - asking Pedroia to shift to SS. At the very least, Theo should have made a new offer to Gonzalez ASAP after not picking up the option - he was the simplest and best solution...

I don't want to give Scuturo a 3-yr deal, but the Sox don't have many options. I'm kind of praying that Lowrie stays healthy and steps up but the Sox can't hope for that...

Tejada was NOT offer arbitration... maybe he's be willing to take a 2-yr deal and Lowrie could share time so they both stay healthy.

Bottom Line:
We could have had Gonzo for $4M and been done with this... now we're looking at moving Pedey to SS and a $3-6M temp. 2B... what a mess.

I think Gonzo is a class act and a great infielder with a below average bat. I really don't think it will be that hard to replace him, Sox fans are just used to not getting much out of short thanks to Lugo and others. This is just not the place the Red Sox are going to make a big offensive move. Missing out on getting either Bay or Holliday is the thing that would be a disaster.

Sure the low price and high quality is the most important. So lots of women want to have famous brand handbags, but they all unhappy on their high price. They have to turn to the replica market. Perha
