LOWELL DEAL OFF

The Mike Lowell to Rangers deal is off because he needs surgery on his thumb.  The Boston Herald has this news:

The Red Sox third baseman was expected to be dealt to the Rangers as soon as tomorrow, but an exam on his right thumb revealed a torn radial collateral ligament in his right thumb which will require surgery, according to a major league source. He will have the surgery sometime after Christmas and will be sidelined six to eight weeks, though he’s expected to be ready for spring training.

This will throw a wrench into any negotiations for Adrian Gonzalez.

Being a Mike Lowell fan, I'm hesitantly, pleasantly pleased to see that he is not going anywhere, yet. When the 2010 season starts, he will be 36 years old, and I steadfastly maintain that 36 yo, is not *that* old! At age 36, I was still riding my mountain bike to the top of Mt. Tamalpais, a round trip distance of about 30 miles and an elevation gain of almost 3000', and also skiing down double black diamonds at Tahoe area ski resorts. I have a good hunch that Mike's defense will sharply improve next season. His offense is still quite healthy. Assuming for a moment that Theo won't be able to trade him because of this thumb injury, and that he will be in the starting line up, I certainly hope that everyone in Fenway Park on Opening Day gives him a 5 minute standing ovation. He is a true professional and a great presence and leader in the clubhouse.

I think this will end up working out well for the Sox...Lowell will be healthy, and they can make a deal in the mid-season for Gonzalez if needed. Great to have Mikey staying in Boston.

The other part of this trade that I never understood was Lowell for Max Ramirez? Max Ramirez who? AND, the Sox were going to eat $9m of Lowell's contract, taboot! Talk about insulting a player!

I am another unapologetic Mikey Lowell fan...so I basically consider that Christmas came early.

Let's hope Theo doesn't have some sort of Plan B for Mikey.

Really tired of hearing the name Adrian Gonzalez. Drop it and move on.

Thanks
